The Last Light of Silver Lake
The lake only appeared at dusk.
Travelers spoke of it in uncertain terms, some claimed it reflected the sky before it changed, others said it showed things that had not yet happened. Most dismissed it as a trick of fading light.
Elin did not.
She had followed the map precisely: three days along the ridge, past the broken birch, and into the valley where no birds sang. By the time she reached the clearing, the sun had already begun to fall.
And then she saw it.
Silver Lake.
Its surface was impossibly still, like polished glass. No wind touched it. No insects hovered above it. It existed apart from the world around it.
Elin stepped closer.
Her reflection stared back at her, but something was wrong.
The girl in the water looked… older. Tired. As if time had moved forward without her.
Elin frowned and reached out.
The lake rippled.
And the reflection vanished.
In its place stood the unicorn.
It did not emerge from the water. It was simply there, on the far edge of the lake, as if it had always been part of the scene.
Its coat was pale silver, blending with the fading light, and its horn glowed faintly, like the first star of evening.
Elin did not move.
“Are you real?” she asked, her voice steadier than she felt.
The unicorn lowered its head slightly.
The lake responded, ripples forming, not from touch, but from presence.
Elin glanced back at the water.
Now it showed something else.
A path.
A different one.
Not the road she had taken, but one she had avoided.
“I made the wrong choice,” she whispered.
The unicorn stepped closer to the water’s edge.
The image sharpened.
Elin saw herself walking that other path, stronger, more certain. Not lost.
A life she had not chosen.
A version of herself she had left behind.
She clenched her fists.
“What is this place?” she asked.
The unicorn’s horn glowed brighter.
The lake shifted again.
Now the images were not just of paths, but of consequences. Small moments branching into larger ones. Decisions folding into futures.
Not fate.
Possibility.
Elin’s breathing slowed.
“You’re showing me what could have been.”
The unicorn did not confirm.
It simply stood, steady and patient.
Elin looked down again.
The lake began to change once more, but this time, it did not show the past.
It showed what came next.
A choice.
Still unwritten.
Elin exhaled.
For the first time since she began her journey, she understood why she had come.
Not to regret.
To decide.
She stepped back from the lake.
The images faded.
The unicorn lifted its head, its light dimming as the last of the sun slipped below the horizon.
“Will I see you again?” Elin asked.
The unicorn turned away.
And as darkness settled, both it, and the lake, were gone.
Leaving only the path ahead.

The Clockwork Unicorn Story
The city never slept.
Gears turned beneath its streets, towers ticked with mechanical precision, and even the wind seemed measured, regulated by unseen systems that kept everything in motion.
Nothing was left to chance.
Especially not magic.
Lio had heard the stories anyway.
The Guardian and the Wanderer
The forest had a way of keeping secrets.
Mist hung low between the trees, weaving through ancient trunks like a living thing. Nothing entered this place by accident, or so the wolf believed.
He had watched the forest longer than he could remember. Seasons shifted, rivers changed course, and creatures came and went, but he remained. Silent. Patient. A guardian, though no one had ever named him as such.
The Quiet Unicorn of Silverwood
At the edge of Silverwood Forest, where the trees grew tall and the light filtered through in soft, shifting patterns, there lived a unicorn no one ever saw.
Her name was Lira.
The villagers spoke of her in passing, usually in the same way they spoke of the wind – something that was there, but never quite within reach. Some said she only appeared at dawn. Others believed she could only be seen by those who weren’t looking for her at all.
